Driven by the dual carbon goals, the concrete admixture industry is accelerating its green transformation. Recently, a research institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with enterprises, announced a new research achievement: a bio-based concrete admixture made from agricultural waste has successfully completed pilot-scale testing, with related technologies reaching internationally advanced levels.

It is understood that traditional concrete admixtures are mostly derived from petrochemical products, resulting in high carbon emissions during production and potential environmental concerns. The newly developed bio-based admixture uses agricultural waste such as corn stalks and sugarcane bagasse as its main raw materials. Produced through processes like biological fermentation and chemical modification, it not only features renewable raw materials and reduces carbon emissions by over 50% compared to traditional products but also exhibits excellent water-reducing and slump-retaining properties, making it compatible with various grades of concrete.

Currently, this bio-based admixture has been trialed in several civil construction projects with positive feedback. The research team stated that the next step is to advance large-scale production technology, reduce costs, and promote the widespread adoption of bio-based admixtures in more engineering fields, thereby supporting the building materials industry in achieving the dual carbon goals.
