Pinglu Canal
The Pinglu Canal is the first major canal project since the founding of the People's Republic of China that connects rivers and the sea, as well as the first canal constructed in China in over a thousand years following the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. As a backbone project of the New Western Land-Sea Corridor, it originates from the Pingtang River estuary in the Xijin Reservoir area of Hengzhou City, Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It passes through Luwu Town in Lingshan County, Qinzhou, and follows the Qin River into the Beibu Gulf. With a total length of 134.2 kilometers, it includes an approximately 6.5-kilometer excavation section across the watershed ridge. Designed according to the Inland River Class I waterway standards, it can accommodate ships of up to 5,000 deadweight tons. The total investment amounts to 72.7 billion yuan. Construction on the project began in August 2022 and is planned to be largely completed by the end of 2026. As of September 10, 2024, the cumulative investment completed reached 59.25 billion yuan, with comprehensive construction of the main structures of the three major hubs now in full swing.
